The end of the Belgian F-16 Solo Display

Belgian Air Force has announced the unexpected cancellation of the F-16 solo display team bringing an end to 44 years of the Belgian F-16 solo display.

On February 19, 2024, the Belgian Air Force announced the unexpected cancellation of its famous F-16 Solo Display stating that the already started transition to the F-35A, the decreasing numbers of available F-16s (some aircraft are reaching their end-of-life milestone) and the support of the training of Ukrainian pilots were the reasons behind this.

This marks the end of 44 years of demonstrating the F-16 to numerous crowds in Belgium and abroad, by no less than 19 different solo display pilots and supported by hundreds of aircraft technicians.

Senior Captain Aviator Steven "Vrieske" De Vries was the last ever Belgian F-16 Solo Display pilot and the Dream Viper was the last Belgian F-16 display jet.

Belgian Air Force statement

“After a magnificent season in 2023, we will not extend the “F-16 solo display” 🇧🇪 in 2024. We have in fact actively started our transition to the F-35, our F-16s are gradually being withdrawn from use when they are reaching the end of their potential and our recent contribution to the training of Ukrainian pilots mobilizes most of our resources. The priority is the training of our fighter pilots, the execution of our operational commitments and the transition to the F-35A.

We are extremely grateful for the work accomplished by the latest F-16 demonstration pilot, Commander Airman Steven “Vrieske” De Vries. For the past two seasons, he has been a tremendous ambassador for the Air Force with his "Dream Viper."

Belgian F-16 Solo Display Statement

“Dream Viper family,

With a heavy heart, we bring you unexpected news: the F-16 Solo Display Team is reluctantly bidding farewell. Regrettably, we must announce the bittersweet conclusion of our incredible two-year journey.

In 2024 we intended to celebrate 50 years of F-16, 45 of F-16 in Belgium, and 30 of those with Cdt De Vries at the throttle and stick of the Viper.

It's important to note that the decision for this farewell is beyond the control of the Dream Viper Team. While the ending may be sudden, the memories and appreciation for your support will endure. We thank you for being a part of our incredible flight, we regret not having the chance to say goodbye to our magnificent audience in person.

Please stay tuned for more information and details, which will follow in due time.”
