ALCA Role Demo

About the Team

The ALCA Role Demo is the Czech Air Force’s tactical two-ship display flown by Aero L-159A ALCA jets from Čáslav’s 21st Tactical Air Force Base. Crews are drawn from frontline L-159 squadrons, so the display mirrors operational tactics while remaining airshow-safe.

The routine typically opens with a simulated airfield-attack/CAS sequence—often supported by pyrotechnics—before transitioning into a compact pairs aerobatic set that showcases the ALCA’s handling. The team regularly appears at major European shows including NATO Days Ostrava and RIAT.

About the Aero L-159 ALCA

Role & origin. The Advanced Light Combat Aircraft is a Czech-built light attack/advanced trainer developed by Aero Vodochody, derived from the L-59. The prototype first flew in 1997, with early deliveries from 2000.

Powerplant & performance. 1 × Honeywell/ITEC F124-GA-100 turbofan (~28 kN/6,300 lbf). Max speed ≈ 936 km/h (≈505 kt); typical service ceiling ≈ 13,200 m (≈43,300 ft).

Avionics & sensors. MIL-STD-1553B architecture with HUD/HOTAS and MFDs; the single-seat L-159A integrates the Grifo-L multi-mode radar for all-weather operations.

Weapons & stores. Seven external stations (three per wing plus centreline) for tanks, pods and ordnance; compatible with NATO stores such as AIM-9 Sidewinder, rocket pods and laser-guided bombs.

L-159 in Czech Service

Conceived to modernise national defence with a domestically-built combat jet, the L-159 progressed from a 1997 prototype to first deliveries in 2000. Operated primarily from Čáslav, the type supports air policing reinforcement, CAS and advanced/lead-in fighter training. New-build/converted two-seat L-159T2 aircraft were delivered in 2019 to enhance training and mission flexibility.

Surplus airframes have been exported or transferred (including to the Iraqi Air Force) and several ex-Czech aircraft now serve with commercial adversary providers—evidence of the ALCA’s versatility and low operating cost.
