SIAF 2026 cancelled as Košice Airport withdraws approval

The organisers of Slovak International Air Fest 2026 have confirmed that this year’s event will no longer take place. The decision follows a formal withdrawal of approval from Košice Airport, where the show had been scheduled for 5–6 September 2026.

According to the Slovak Aviation Association, the airport cited security concerns, stricter safety protocols, protection of critical infrastructure, and an expected rise in commercial traffic. The airport has also decided not to host any large public events on its grounds or in the immediate vicinity for the remainder of 2026.

Advanced planning halted

The cancellation comes at a late stage in preparations, with months of planning, international coordination, and contractual agreements already in place. Invitations had been sent to NATO and partner air forces, and multiple confirmations had already been secured.

Among those confirmed were the German Air Force and the French Air and Space Force, the latter planning to deploy an Airbus A400M. Discussions were also ongoing with several European nations, alongside interest from the UK, including the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team.

Organisers were additionally in active talks with the UAE’s Al Fursan Aerobatic Team, whose return would have been a major highlight of the flying programme.

Wider programme and partnerships

SIAF 2026 had been positioned as more than a traditional airshow. A full programme around the event was planned, including an aviation conference bringing together military, academic, and industry representatives, alongside the Golden Wings National Aviation Awards ceremony.

Strategic partnerships had also been formalised earlier this year, linking regional authorities, academic institutions, and aviation organisations in a wider effort to position Košice as a central European aviation hub.

Tribute to the “White Albatrosses”

One of the standout themes for 2026 was set to be a tribute to the historic Biele albatrosy, marking 35 years since the formation of the Košice-based military aerobatic team.

Plans included a symbolic return to the city with a formation flight featuring the Baltic Bees Jet Team, flying the L-39 Albatros, the same type once operated by the original Slovak team. Former pilots were expected to take part, creating a rare and meaningful homecoming moment.

Organisers looking ahead

Despite the setback, organisers have made clear that this is not the end for SIAF. Director General Hubert Štoksa acknowledged the disappointment, particularly following a previous cancellation in 2024, but stressed that efforts will continue to secure an alternative path forward.

Further updates on the future of the event are expected in due course as organisers explore potential next steps.
