German Armed Forces Headline RIAT 2026 with Major Flying and Static Displays

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) has released its latest update for the 2026 edition, dedicating this week’s announcement to an impressive contribution from the German armed forces.

Organisers describe it as a “bumper line-up” that includes three flying displays, marking one of the strongest showings by Germany in recent years. RIAT 2026, set for July at RAF Fairford, will feature iconic fast jets in the air alongside transport aircraft, helicopters and support types on the ground. The participation underscores the close ongoing partnership between the event and the German military.

German Air Force Tornado

Flying Displays: Tornado and Eurofighter Lead the Charge

The highlight for many visitors will be the rare sight of a Panavia Tornado performing in the flying display. Provided by Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 (TLG 51) “Immelmann”, the Tornado display promises high-energy manoeuvres from this iconic variable-sweep-wing jet, which remains a cornerstone of German air power. With the Luftwaffe’s Tornado fleet approaching the end of its service life, this appearance offers enthusiasts a valuable opportunity to see the aircraft in full flight at a major international airshow.

Complementing the Tornado is the Eurofighter EF2000 from TLG 31 “Boelcke”. The display forms part of RIAT’s “Fighter Meet” theme and represents only the second time a German Eurofighter has performed in the flying display at the event. Both the Tornado and Eurofighter will deliver dynamic solo performances, showcasing the precision and capability of the German Air Force’s frontline combat aircraft.

Static Displays: A321 Debut Joins Returning Favourites

On the ground, the German Air Force will make its RIAT debut with an Airbus A321-251NX. The aircraft will be displayed as part of the show’s “Royal Flight” theme, highlighting executive and VIP transport roles. The German Air Force operates a fleet of three A321s from its Executive Transport Wing at Cologne Bonn Airport, with two being the more modern A321LR (Long Range) variants assigned to the 1st Air Transport Squadron. These grey-painted aircraft, known as the “grey fleet”, are stretched developments of the Airbus A320 family and share the same pilot type rating, enabling seamless crew transitions.

The A321-251NX belongs to the NEO (New Engine Option) generation introduced in 2010, which features more efficient engines and wingtip devices that reduce fuel consumption by around 15 per cent. Over 3,500 A321-family aircraft have been produced worldwide, with assembly lines in Germany, France, the United States and China. The German example selected for RIAT will give visitors a close look at a modern, long-range transport that supports both parliamentary duties and medical evacuation missions.

Also returning to the static park are the Airbus A400M transport, the heavy-lift CH-53G helicopter and the naval Sea Lynx helicopter. These stalwarts of German operations will provide a comprehensive picture of the Luftwaffe and German Navy’s transport and rotary-wing capabilities.

Army NH90: Flying Display and Static Presence

The German Army’s NH90 helicopter will appear in both the flying display and static display. A regular and popular participant at RIAT, the NH90 TTH (Troop Transport Helicopter) variant operated by the German Army can carry up to 20 fully equipped troops. Its inclusion in the flying programme will showcase the type’s agility and tactical versatility, while the static exhibit allows detailed inspection of this modern multi-role rotorcraft.

Strong Partnership and More to Come

RIAT organisers have expressed sincere thanks to their German counterparts for their continued outstanding support. The confirmed German contingent adds significant depth to the 2026 flying and static programmes, blending historic types nearing retirement with current frontline and support aircraft.

Further announcements on additional participants for RIAT 2026 are expected in the coming weeks. With the German line-up now confirmed, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a memorable celebration of international military aviation at RAF Fairford this July.
