Frecce Tricolori to return to Romania after 14 years

The Frecce Tricolori will return to Romania in 2026, with the Italian Air Force aerobatic team now confirmed for the biggest air show in Romania the Bucharest International Air Show on 28 and 29 August at Bucharest Băneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport.

Their return carries extra weight as it marks 14 years since their last appearance in Romania, which came at BIAS 2012, when the team displayed at Bucharest Băneasa.

A rare international Display

For 2026, Bucharest is one of only two international appearances on the Frecce Tricolori display schedule outside Italy. The other is the Swedish Air Force 100 years event at Malmen on 22 and 23 August, making BIAS one of the team’s most notable overseas commitments of the season.

That alone makes this a major addition to the Romanian airshow calendar. Overseas appearances by the team are limited compared with their domestic programme, so any international display carries extra weight, especially one this late in the season.

Back over Bucharest

Romanian spectators last saw the team at BIAS in July 2012, when the Italian formation appeared at Bucharest Băneasa during the airport’s centenary year celebrations. Their 2026 appearance brings one of the event’s best-known past participants back to Bucharest for the first time since then.

That return is likely to be one of the headline attractions of BIAS 2026. A team of this stature does not appear often in Romania, and a 14-year gap only sharpens the sense of occasion around their comeback.

Approaching the end of the MB-339 era

The 2026 appearance also comes as the Frecce Tricolori approach the end of operations with the Aermacchi MB-339PAN, which has been the team’s display aircraft since 1982. The Leonardo M-346 has been selected as its replacement, with the transition expected to follow after what should be the team’s final full display season on the MB-339 in 2027.

That timing gives Bucharest added weight. With the transition approaching and international appearances already limited, it is unlikely the team will return to Romania in consecutive years. As a result, BIAS 2026 may very well represent the last opportunity to see the Frecce Tricolori perform in Romania with the MB-339.

More than just another team booking

There is added historical context as well. Formed in 1961, the Frecce Tricolori remain one of Europe’s longest-established and most recognisable military aerobatic teams, known for operating the largest national team formation in the world.

Seen in that light, BIAS 2026 brings together several strong angles at once: a major international team, a return after 14 years, one of only two foreign appearances in the season, and a display that comes at the closing stage of the MB-339 era.
