Spanish Eurofighter C.16 Tifón set for Athens Flying Week 2026 debut
The Spanish Air & Space Force Eurofighter C.16 Tifón solo display has been confirmed for Athens Flying Week 2026, marking the teams first appearance at Greece’s largest airshow.
The modern Spanish Typhoon will perform over Tanagra Air Base on 5–6 September, adding another frontline NATO fighter to a show that has built a strong reputation for attracting high-performance fast-jet demonstrations.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is one of Europe’s most advanced multirole fighter aircraft.
Spain’s frontline Eurofighter
Spain operates the Eurofighter Typhoon under the national designation C.16 Tifón, forming a central part of the Spanish Air & Space Force’s air defence capability. The type entered Spanish service in the early 2000s and today equips several fighter wings tasked with national air policing, NATO missions and expeditionary deployments.
Powered by two Eurojet EJ200 engines, the aircraft is capable of sustained supersonic flight and high-energy manoeuvring that makes it particularly well suited to airshow demonstration flying. In operational service the Typhoon combines air-to-air dominance with multirole strike capability, carrying a wide range of modern weapons and sensors.
At airshows, however, the focus shifts from combat capability to raw performance. The solo display typically highlights the Typhoon’s extreme power-to-weight ratio, rapid climb performance and tight high-G turns, typically accompanied by live commentary from another Typhoon pilot explaining the manoeuvres to the crowd.
Eurofighter is powered by two EJ200 engines producing around 20,000 lbf of thrust each with afterburner.
A new Typhoon operator for Athens
Athens Flying Week has hosted several Eurofighter appearances over the years, but from different operators. German and Royal Saudi Air Force Typhoon demonstrations have previously featured at Tanagra, giving audiences a chance to see the aircraft in action.
The Spanish display will therefore add a new national operator to that list.
For aviation enthusiasts, that distinction matters more than it might appear at first glance. Different air forces often present the aircraft in slightly different ways, with variations in display sequences, flying style and aircraft markings. Even with the same aircraft type, the character of the display can change noticeably from one operator to another.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is capable of speeds above Mach 2.
Athens Flying Week’s fast-jet reputation
Held annually at Tanagra Air Base, Athens Flying Week has become one of Europe’s most prominent late-season airshows. The event regularly attracts a strong mix of Hellenic Air Force participation alongside visiting international military aircraft.
Tanagra itself is a fitting venue for modern fighter demonstrations. The base is home to the Hellenic Air Force’s Mirage 2000-5 fleet and frequently hosts large-scale aviation events, making it a natural stage for high-performance jet displays.
Over the years, Athens Flying Week has featured a wide range of modern combat aircraft including F-16s, Mirages, Rafales and Eurofighters, alongside historic aircraft, aerobatic teams and military transport types.
The Typhoon’s canard-delta wing design gives the aircraft exceptional agility in high-G manoeuvres.
Spain returns with a new headline act
Spain has appeared at Athens Flying Week before with other aircraft types, including the EF-18 Hornet and the well-known Patrulla Águila display team. The 2026 appearance of the Eurofighter C.16 therefore represents not Spain’s first participation at the event, but the debut of its most modern fighter.
For visitors in September, that means the distinctive shape of the canard-delta Eurofighter will once again join the Tanagra skyline, this time carrying Spanish roundels.
And when a Typhoon lights the afterburners over an airshow crowd, subtle national differences matter less than the universal language of jet noise, heat haze and raw thrust. Two EJ200 engines at full power tend to make their point very clearly.
The Eurofighter Typhoon first flew in 1994 before entering service in the 2000s.
The Spanish Air & Space Force Eurofighter C.16 Tifón will bring another frontline Typhoon display to Tanagra when it appears at Athens Flying Week on 5–6 September 2026, marking the aircraft’s debut at the event.
